THE North-East job market is “starting to feel different” as employers increasingly look to recruit staff and increase hours, it has been claimed.

Jobcentre Plus says the region’s market is “relatively buoyant”, with employment numbers standing at a near record 1.21 million.

The figures were revealed as national findings showed the UK’s unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest since the summer of 1975.

Carol Daniell, Jobcentre Plus’ external relations manager for Darlington and County Durham, told The Northern Echo the region’s employment landscape was changing for the better, with its claimant count almost halving in the last five years.

She also revealed companies, particularly those operating across hospitality and retail sectors, are seeking new staff.

She told The Northern Echo: “We are working with lots of employers who are recruiting for a whole range of areas.

“There is still uncertainty but the market is relatively buoyant and is starting to feel different.

“We are now having conversations about employers looking to recruit or increase hours.”

According to official figures, released yesterday by Peter Rippingale, the organisation’s inward investment manager, said the firm was a great example of how the North-East is home to highcalibre operators.

He said: “FM Coatings is a classic example of a company whose skills and expertise are in high demand from some of the biggest car manufacturers in the country.

“We look forward to seeing them go from strength-tostrength in County Durham.”

Councillor Simon Henig, leader of Durham County Council, urged businesses to follow FM Coatings’ lead.

He added: “This county has so much to offer; from our supportive business environment through to fantastic transport links and access to graduates.

“We strongly believe Durham is a business beacon and would encourage others to consider it as a destination for their companies.”
