A PORT boss who oversaw a major expansion at a Teesside dock is leaving the region for a national role.

David Robinson, chief executive at PD Ports, has accepted a post at the port’s parent company.

Mr Robinson is moving to London to take over as director of operations at Brookfield Infrastructure, with an initial focus on UK and European port assets.

He will also become chairman of PD Ports.

Mr Robinson was intrinsic in £35m work to redevelop the quayside at PD Port’s Teesport base, near Middlesbrough, to create a 550-metre deep-water area capable of welcoming larger vessels carrying greater cargo.

Appointed chief executive more than ten years ago, he said he would look back on his time in the region with great fondness.

Speaking to customers and stakeholders, he said: “It has been a great privilege to undertake the role of chief executive in this fantastic business.

“You can be assured the team are very determined and focused to continue the progress we have made and provide you with an excellent level of service.”

Mr Robinson added the changes will see Frans Calje become chief executive, with Jerry Hopkinson taking over as chief operations officer and vice-chairman of PD Ports.

Teesport’s new quay was celebrated last year in a topping out ceremony by Lord Michael Heseltine.

PD Ports says the quay, referred to as Number One, was originally built in the early 1960s, but had reached its limit in the face of bigger ships, advanced cranes and more modern handling equipment.

The 18-month renovation project saw the demolition and re-construction of 24,000 tonnes of concrete decking.
