THE North-East will only achieve its potential if major changes to road, rail and air links are delivered, a business organisation has warned.

The North East England Chamber of Commerce (NEECC) has released a report highlighting key transport improvements it believes are paramount to the future success of the region.

Its demands include the swift completion of planned upgrades to the A1 and A19, and improvements to the East Coast Mainline.

The body also wants new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro and improvements to road and rail access at Newcastle International Airport.

Arlen Pettitt, NEECC policy adviser, said: “The North-East is still feeling the impact of historic under-investment in our transport infrastructure.

“Vocal, business-led campaigns – championed by the chamber – have seen improvements to the A1, the A19 and the region’s rail services, but there is still a long way to go.

“It’s important to keep the pressure on and ensure businesses have the transport infrastructure they need to reach customers, new markets and a talented workforce.”

Graeme Mason, chairman of the chamber’s transport forum, who is also planning and corporate affairs director at Newcastle Airport, echoed Mr Pettitt’s call.

He added: “With the right investment, the North-East’s transport infrastructure can become a real enabler of economic success.

“It’s absolutely crucial we speak loudly and clearly about our needs.”
