A TECHNOLOGY firm is working with a trainbuilder to improve passengers’ journeys.
Nomad Digital, headquartered in Newcastle, is supplying Wi-Fi for Swiss-based Stadler’s new Giruno rolling stock.
Bosses say the WiFi will be used by passengers on Girunos as they travel between Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Austria.
The agreement comes after Nomad signed a ten-year deal with Austrian rail operator, ÖBB, to provide WiFi and multimedia services for trains covering countries including Hungary and the Czech Republic.
Andrew Taylor, Nomad Digital chief executive, said “This is an exciting partnership and further extends our influence in a region of growing significance.
“It also delivers a service offering unparalleled connectivity irrespective of borders.”
Earlier this year, Nomad revealed it had delivered Wi-Fi upgrades for Virgin Trains’ west coast services, saying the changes will give travellers access to higher quality video.
Nomad was previously awarded a contract by Hitachi Rail Europe, which is building rolling stock at its £82m factory in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham.
Hitachi chose Nomad to fit on-board server systems for its fleet of Intercity Express Programme trains, which will replace stock on the East Coast and Great Western lines.
The servers provide a single gateway for transmission of all operational data between the train and the trackside, including information on how the train is performing, energy consumption and seat reservations.
