A PLASTICS firm has created jobs after embarking on a £1m venture to keep pace with car maker demand.

Omega Plastics Group, a merger between Omega Plastics and Signal Plastics, is strengthening its factories, which include sites in Hartlepool, Washington, Wearside, and Blyth, Northumberland.

Bosses say their investment has delivered posts for plant operators, adding they have spent £400,000 on a 1,300-tonne injection moulding press and robots at its Signals’ Washington base.

They added it will allow the business to make more and larger parts for the automotive sector, where it is a supplier to various manufacturers, including Sunderland-based Nissan.

Alan Franklin, Signal Plastics’ managing director, said: “We’ve made this investment on the back of increased demand from the automotive industry.

“It’s a significant development in the growth of the business.

“It will extend our product offer and make our process more cost-effective by improving energy efficiency.”

The company employs about 70 people and expects turnover to rise 50 per cent this year to £8.5m.
