CAR parts manufacturer ElringKlinger (GB) has started the process of transferring key work from Germany to its Teesside plant.

The installation of a mechanical press with feeding systems and introduction of 96 separate parts is part of the handover of soft gasket production from Dettingen an der Erms, in southern Germany to Redcar.

Phase two is now getting underway, which will involve transferring the remainder of soft gaskets – a figure which exceeds 1,000 – and other equipment including a new water jet cutter.

ElringKlinger (GB) production engineer Ray Griffiths said: “We will be producing parts using our existing equipment before the end of this year – there’s nothing stopping us getting started so it’s an exciting time for business.

“The Redcar plant has long been recognised as a centre of excellence for the production of soft gaskets, and this transfer simply cements that standing.”

Ian Malcolm, managing director at ElringKlinger (GB), said: “At ElringKlinger, our strategy has always been to engage with our customers and to understand the technical requirements and development timing necessary to support their requirements. This most recent press installation marks the fifth in the last two years and ensures we can continue to increase efficiency whilst reducing time and associated costs.

“Looking at the bigger picture; it is investment such as this which will continue to create new recruitment opportunities for the workforce and help drive the local economy. Much of our success has come from having the bravery to invest and spend for tomorrow, and this is an approach we will continue to adopt in the future.”

ElringKlinger (GB) employs more than 250 staff in the North-East. The firm has doubled its workforce since 2009 and exceeded its target set in 2012 to recruit 60 members of staff by 2015.
