A LAW firm has bought a rival to maintain its growth.

Newtons Solicitors has acquired Calder Meynell Solicitors, which has offices in Thirsk and Northallerton, North Yorkshire.

Bosses say the business will remain a separate legal entity as Calder Meynell LLP, but will be rebranded as Calder Meynell Newtons.

The firm was founded by Kerri Calder and Howard Meynell in 2011.

It employs seven staff and has turnover of £300,000, overseeing services on family law, agricultural and rural issues and residential property.

Chris Newton, Newtons’ managing director, said: “Calder Meynell’s offices will form an important geographical link in our group.

“I’ve wanted Newtons to have a presence in Northallerton and Thirsk for a long time and I’m delighted by the positive way our teams have started working together.”

Deals have been a major part of Newtons’ growth, with the company previously acquiring Hodgsons and Mortimer Solicitors, Geoff Mochrie Solicitors, and Thorp Parker Solicitors.

Mr Newton added: “We are in talks with several firms who may join us as we continue to build our business across the North and are open to approaches from other interested practices.”

Newtons was founded by Mr Newton and his wife, Sarah, in 2009.

It now has 90 staff and runs a number of offices, including bases in Darlington, Leyburn, Richmond and Stokesley, in North Yorkshire.
