A HOUSEBUILDER has revealed increased North-East sales as buyers benefit from greater help to get on the property ladder.

Barratt Developments, which includes Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, says deals have lifted 38 per cent in the region, compared to last year.

The firm, founded by North-East property tycoon Sir Lawrie Barratt, hailed the Help to Buy scheme as a key driver in its growth, which has helped fuel demand.

The company also pointed to its developments, which include Meadow Rise, in Stockton, and The Limes, at Coxhoe, County Durham, as major factors in its success.

Fenton Hewitt, Barratt Developments’ North-East sales director, said the business’ progress shows the market is improving.

He said: “We are delighted with the increase in sales at our developments across the North-East and want to thank everyone in the team for helping this happen.

“As the economy continues to develop, it’s very encouraging to see demand growing for new homes across the region.

“What’s more, it’s been brilliant to see people taking advantage of schemes, such as Help to Buy, as we’re seeing more and more first time buyers taking their first step onto the property ladder.”

Last month, Barratt revealed sales were 10.8 per cent higher at 16,447 for the year to June 30.

The company highlighted the competition among high street borrowers for the rise, saying it has contributed to higher sales and selling prices.

Total average prices increased, from £219,900 last year to £235,000, with pre-tax profits lifting 45 per cent to £565m.

The firm also lauded its decision to spend £4.5bn on land during the recession, saying it had delivered a record forward order book of more than £2.5bn.

In January, Barratt unveiled plans to create 600 jobs across the North-East, including bricklayers, electricians, landscapers and head office staff, which will take its regional workforce to about 2,200 people.
