A PORT operator will welcome the largest ever vessels to its base under a new deal.
PD Ports, which operates Teesport, says global shipping line, K-Line, will run a service to the region from Japan.
Bosses say the route, starting in September, will use 7500-unit vessels to shift cargoes from Japan’s Port of Tokuyama-Kudamatsu, to the region.
Its vessels stand about 200 metres long, and Frans Calje, PD Ports’ managing director for unitised and portcentric logistics, said the agreement emphasised the port’s capabilities.
He said: “We are pleased to announce the arrival of this new service to Teesport, which is already one of the largest and best connected ports in the UK.
“This additional service further strengthens PD Ports’ position as a leading player in the UK ports sector and highlights its flexibility and adaptability within a changing market.”
A K-Line spokesman added: “The port's excellent infrastructure and its proximity to important North-East markets makes it the perfect choice for our business.”
The K-Line announcement comes after PD Ports revealed it has ordered three gantry cranes to help shift more goods.
The Northern Echo understands the cranes will be made in Ireland, by Liebherr Container Cranes.
