A NORTH-EAST miner has agreed a deal to ensure the smooth running of its machinery.

Banks Mining has awarded a two-year contract to Pirtek Tyne and Wear to look after equipment at its regional surface mines.

Banks, which runs its group headquarters from Meadowfield, near Durham City, says Pirtek will provide on-site repairs, including a service to cover hydraulic hose breakdowns.

A new role for a technician has been created to carry out the repairs.

Banks has surface mines at Brenkley Lane, near Newcastle, and Shotton, Northumberland, which employ more than 200 workers.

Robbie Bentham, its mining plant director, said: “Pirtek has shown the mechanical expertise and service commitment we need.

“The coal we produce sustains substantial numbers of jobs for local people.

“It also supports British industry and electricity generation, creates considerable capital for investment in community improvement projects, heats homes across our region and helps provide a reliable source of indigenous coal that reduces the UK’s reliance on imports.”

Pirtek specialises in hydraulic hoses, pipe fittings and couplings, and works from offices on the Team Valley.

Kevin Monaghan, operations director, said it was delighted to be working with Banks.

He added: “Mechanical breakdowns have a direct impact on the efficiency of Banks Mining’s operations, so the quicker we can carry out repairs, the smaller these impacts will be.

“Having a client like Banks on our doorstep is a real advantage, and we’re aiming to build a strong working relationship with the Shotton and Brenkley Lane teams.”
