A MANUFACTURING firm is building its supply chain in a Chinese joint venture.

Thermal Resources Management (TRM), in Washington, Wearside, says it has a 40 per cent share in a Shanghai-based project with sister company Mineral Insulated Cables Company.

The temperature measurement equipment specialist makes products used in the oil and gas industry, and its Asian operation includes a plant in Hefei, eastern China, as the company looks for local suppliers to cut the costs of exporting components from the UK.

Speaking about its growth, Nick Morton TRM director, said: “We have only been manufacturing in China in serious quantities since the start of the year and we have 60 to 70 staff there.

“The factory makes specialist heating cables, some of which we will use.

“However, because it’s a joint venture, we are giving them technical assistance to address the substantial market in China and elsewhere in Asia.”

The firm is strengthening its links with China further after welcoming student Zuer Qi, who has joined on placement through the Sunderland-Harbin friendship agreement.

The 19-year-old, who is from the Chinese city of Harbin, has been tasked with researching suppliers and providing feedback to TRM.

Mr Morton added: “Zuer is aiming to get a feel for the size and type of companies.

“I’ve asked for her impressions about the way they present themselves, their professionalism, and whether they are state-owned or young entrepreneurial companies.”

Councillor Harry Trueman, Sunderland City Council deputy leader, praised TRM.

He added: “The company exports around 85 per cent of its output.

“The opening of its joint venture plant in China is further evidence Sunderland manufacturing know-how is among the best in the world.”
