A DIVISION of a subsea firm cutting North-East jobs says it has secured a lucrative Ghanaian contract.

DeepOcean Ghana will provide a construction vessel for Tullow Ghana.

Bosses say the vessel, known as the Rem Forza, will be used to inspect, survey and building work on Tullow’s deepwater and TEN fields, off Ghana.

However, the work comes as DeepOcean’s UK division, which has bases in Darlington and South Bank, near Middlesbrough, prepares to shed a third of its 136-strong workforce.

The Northern Echo previously revealed the company was cutting 45 jobs, with the firm claiming the Government was not supporting the UK supply chain and instead allowing contracts to go to foreign rivals.

The UK division will be one of the hardest hit in the changes, with more redundancies expected in this region than across DeepOcean’s Norwegian bases, which also work on offshore wind projects.

Consultation with affected staff will end this month.

The company has offices in Darlington’s Coniscliffe Road, which provide engineering, design and geo-technical investigation work, and a marine site in South Bank, near Middlesbrough, to prepare equipment for use.
