A NORTH-EAST port is working with a shipping firm to expand North Sea business.

Teesport, operated by PD Ports, near Middlesbrough, says P&O Ferries is introducing a daily service from the region to Zeebrugge, in Belgium.

Bosses say it will give firms more choice in shipping goods to the North-East and Scotland.

They said the Mistral service will start in January, working alongside the Bore Song.

Geoff Lippitt, PD Ports’ business development director, said: “This new service is another significant development for Teesport and further positions it as a major gateway to Northern England and Scotland.

“For importers and exporters to and from Europe it is excellent news, as it will provide the very important daily frequency to this major European hub.”

Janette Bell, P&O Ferries’ commercial director, added: “We are moving fast to capture the growth potential in the North Sea freight market.”

PD Ports previously revealed a £3m investment in a rail terminal at Teesport, which bosses said will strengthen connections with Felixstowe and Southampton, as well as delivering potential new routes to Scotland, the Midlands and the North-West.
