A CABLE cleat firm says it wants to expand its presence in the offshore and shipping sectors after its products were recognised by an industry leader.

Ellis, based in Rillington, near Scarborough, says its cleats have received type approval from DNV GL.

DNV GL is the world’s leading ship and offshore classification society and a global leader of independent assurance and expert advisory services.

Ellis’ cable cleats secure electrical feeds to withstand forces, including those felt in a short circuit.

Andy Booth, Ellis' technical director, said: “DNV GL type approval is one of the most commonly requested product certifications in any of the geographical or industry markets, which we operate in.

“Although we already have a considerable presence in the offshore and shipping market, this approval will open a great deal of new doors and enable us to firmly establish our position as market leader.”

Ellis’ approval covers the fixing of cables on mobile offshore units and ships.

Earlier this year, Ellis, which employs about 50 workers, provided fire-proof cleats to the 23-storey BP4 Tower, in London's Canary Wharf.

The firm has also sent cable cleats and cable straps to the Areva European Pressurised Reactor factory, in China's Guangdong province, and developed a tamper-proof device that could lead to a crackdown on theft of copper cable from the UK's rail network.
