A CABLE cleat specialist has provided fire safety equipment for a major London business development.

Ellis, based in Rillington, near Scarborough, has sent fire-proof cleats to the 23-storey BP4 Tower in Canary Wharf.

The Phoenix cleats are designed to secure fire protection-rated cables in place during extreme temperatures.

Paul Nolan, Ellis' UK sales director, said: “In order for fire protection-rated cables to continue working in an emergency, they need to remain intact and in place.

“If these cables aren’t properly restrained then the risks are clear; the loss of vital services and the likelihood of live cables falling and causing potentially lethal hazards.

“Any building should strive to ensure products used to protect the emergency systems are the best available.

“However, when you consider BP4 is a 530,000sq ft development in the heart of one of London’s key business districts, it was an absolute imperative.”

Last month, Ellis, which employs about 50 workers, revealed it had secured a deal to send cable cleats and cable straps to the Areva European Pressurised Reactor factory in China's Guangdong province, which can restrain cables and withstand forces in a short circuit.

It has also sent cleats to the Zawtika Development, off the coast of Myanmar, in south-east Asia, to help build living quarters on an offshore platform, and RWE Npower Renewables' £1.7bn Gwynt y Mor wind farm, off the North Wales coast.
