A TELECOMS firm planning to cut 140 jobs says it is bringing more superfast services to the North-East.

Mobile phone company EE has revealed its superfast 4G will be live in Durham City before Christmas.

Bosses previously revealed 4G, which allows instant internet access, would be live in Darlington and Middlesbrough by the end of the year.

Newcastle, Sunderland, and Houghton-le-Spring and Chester-le-Street, both in County Durham, already have 4G coverage.

Claire Dobson, EE North-East regional manager, said: “The arrival of 4G mobile in Durham means customers can access content without being frustrated by slow pages and apps not connecting.”

Earlier this year, EE, which is Darlington's biggest private employer with about 2,000 workers, revealed it would make about 140 cuts to its administration and support staff departments.

Bosses said they were consulting with about 200 workers across its sites in Darlington, North Shields, North Tyneside, and Doxford, Sunderland.

However, they said any job losses will be made across its whole UK division.

In August, the firm, which operates the T-Mobile, Orange and EE brands in the UK, announced it was creating 100 North-East jobs by taking on full-time and part-time call centre and sales workers in Darlington and North Shields.
