Darlington office voted one of best in the country
THE Memphis Building for the Student Loans Company on Lingfield Point in Darlington has been named as one of the best workplaces in the country.
The development won the Test of Time category at the British Council for Offices' (BCO) National Awards.
The site, which was previously derelict, was originally part of a 1950's wool factory. It has since been transformed into moderns offices to include meeting spaces, break out areas, quiet zones, a central cafe and a games area.
The building was recognised as the best Refurbished/Recycled Workplace in the 2009 BCO Awards.
Tim Robinson, the BCO awards chairman, said: "A derelict warehouse is not automatically considered to be ideal for conversion to offices - but this is precisely what has taken place over the past five years. It is incredible to see that a building designed for industrial purposes can be so successfully transformed into a workplace fit for this century and beyond."
