A 25-YEAR-OLD family-run engineering firm, whose welding machines made fencing for the London Olympic Games, is primed for international dominance after a major expansion.

Lamba Welding Systems, based in Richmond, North Yorkshire, aims to continue its growth after winning work in the Czech Republic and Singapore and servicing machines around the world.

The contracts came after Lamba strengthened its UK base through the acquisition of a 60-year-old micro welder business from Rymer Engineering, in Keighley, West Yorkshire.

Bosses also secured a deal for the 30-year-old friction saw division of M&M Webb, in Northamptonshire, which they say will enhance its work on industrial flooring welding machines.

Lamba, whose welding machinery is used to produce shopping trolleys, crowd control barriers and dishwasher baskets, last year move into a new factory four times larger than its original base to keep pace with its rapid expansion.

Brian Bates, the company's founder and managing director, says the firm, which employs 15 workers, including three apprentices, will continue designing and manufacturing products in Richmond for UK and international clients.

Mr Bates is supported at the company by wife Julie, who is general manager, and youngest daughter Hannah, who is working at the business while studying at university.

He said the firm was in a strong position after sheltering from the recession by using its versatility to sell and build new welding lines and repair older machinery, which has helped turnover increase to more than £1.2m.

He said: “We really have come on leaps and bounds and our investments reflect that.

“Rymer were closing down the micro welding side, so we bought it off them to keep growing.

“I'm proud of our dedicated team who have helped us achieve so much in 25 years.”

Mr Bates also revealed the firm was committed to adding to its legacy by nurturing the next generation of workers to continue its growth.

He said: “Employing and encouraging those who have an interest in engineering straight from college is an important factor.

“It aspires them to work towards their goal in life and gets them on the right track.”
