A NORTH-EAST motor retailer has extended its apprenticeship programme after taking on a 16-year-old.

Vic Young Nissan, in South Shields, South Tyneside, has welcomed Kyle Brewis, who was chosen ahead of more than 24 applicants for the role in the company's Northern Truck Bodies division, which develops unique conversions of specialist vehicles, including Motability vehicles.

Kyle's appointment comes after apprentice Adam Parker joined the firm.

He is now half way through his training in the firm’s service workshop and at Milltec College, in Sunderland.

The company says its committed to developing young people, and works with Gateshead College on an NVQ welding and fabrication course, with many of its senior managers having worked their way to senior positions.

Kyle said: “The motor industry has always been in my blood from an early age as my dad also works at Vic Young so it seemed like the natural step to put myself forward for the apprenticeship scheme.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity and I’m sure I’ll learn a lot in the months and years ahead.”

Vic Young, the company's managing director, said: “It is fantastic to have Kyle on board, and it is a real pleasure to set him on his way to follow in his father’s footsteps, who started his career with us as an apprentice over 20 years ago.

“It is essential that all business owners take responsibility in ensuring that they provide opportunities to fulfil a young person’s maximum ability.”
