David Harker, Durham County Cricket Club chief executive, buys wine school
HE'S tasted the success of an Ashes series winning Test match, and now he's hoping to savour his latest venture.
David Harker, chief executive of Durham County Cricket Club, is now the owner of a North-East wine school.
Mr Harker, last month oversaw England's victory against Australia at Chester-le-Street, and has bought Newcastle Wine School from Jesmond businessman Chris Powell.
The wine enthusiast, from Prudhoe, Northumberland, has completed a wine and spirit education trust diploma, and met Mr Powell after signing up for tastings to help his studies.
Mr Harker, who will continue his work with the cricket club, said he was looking forward to a change of environment.
He said: “I feel hugely proud to have played a part in the achievements of Durham County Cricket Club, and I felt that this year was the right time to look for a new challenge.
“When the opportunity arose to turn my passion for wine into a career, it was just too exciting to pass up.
“I would like to develop our specialist corporate wine events service, as I have enjoyed corporate wine tastings in the past and I know there is opportunity for growth in that market.
“We will also be offering a full range of professional courses for the committed enthusiast and the North-East hospitality sector, and hope to expand to run tastings in Hexham and Durham.”
