FULL SWING: Specialist golf retailer American Golf could create 250 new jobs after enjoying record sales.
The company, which has outlets in Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Gateshead, says it plans to open 30 new stores during the next three years after sales increased by three per cent to £133m for the year ending January 31.
The retailer, owned by Sun Capital Partners, also wants to launch new ladies stores and 11 centres of excellence.
PAY FREEZE: Virgin Atlantic could be heading for record losses of up to £135m, raising worries it may cut jobs among its 9,000 staff.
The company, owned by Sir Richard Branson, is under a pay freeze instigated by chief executive Craig Kreeger, after it experienced an £80 loss last year combined with rising fuel costs and airport charges.
Sir Richard last month told The Northern Echo he would bid to take control of the East Coast train route later this year.
NEW LIFE: Multinational mass media corporation News Corp will start as a publishing company with no debt and £1.7bn in cash when it splits from its TV and film ties.
The company, founded by current chairman Rupert Murdoch, said it would have assess including The Times and The Sun newspapers, and book publisher HarperCollins.
It expects to make the split in operations in June.
