A NORTH-EAST port has recorded its highest cargo volumes for more than 20 years after handling 667,000 cars and 3.7m tonnes of coal in the last 12 months.
The Port of Tyne, in South Shields, South Tyneside, handled 6.5 tonnes of cargo in 2012, an increase of 22 per cent from 2011.
The port is the UK's biggest car exporter and earlier this year revealed £180m plans to build warehouses to store thousands of tonnes of wood pellets creating 300 full-time jobs and 900 construction posts.
The port, which oversees deliveries for Nissan, VW, Tetley and JML, has also invested £5m into deepening berths and the river channel to accommodate larger ships.
