New skills training for ex-Armed Forces personnel

A TRAINING charity is helping to equip former Armed Forces personnel with the skills to launch careers in engineering.

 

The TTE Technical Training Group in Middlesbrough is working with specialist maintenace frm Wood Group PSN to address a skills shortage in the oil & gas industry through a training programme for former services people with existing trade qualifications.

A series of residential programmes are being held in instrument, electrical and mechanical disciplines, which support nationally accredited qualifications.

The first programme will feature four instrument and six mechanical technicians, supported by a team of experienced TTE training staff. About 80 per cent of the training is delivered in TTE’s high-specification workshops and 20 per cent in the classroom.

The new contract follows a pilot scheme in 2011 when a group of 11 instrument technicians from the Armed Forces completed the programme at TTE and went on to work for Wood Group PSN at oil & gas sites. 

Steve Grant, managing director of TTE, said: “Wood Group PSN has taken a very proactive approach to addressing the skills challenges of the oil & gas industry. It has identified the armed forces as a key resource in can tap into to recruit and train individuals who can become valuable members of the workforce.

"The Armed Forces is facing quite a significant reduction in personnel, which does present an opportunity for engineering-based businesses. Ex-Forces personnel bring tremendous benefits to employers, not only with any existing trade skills, but with their attitude and commitment.”
