Wind of change comes sweeping in

A NORTH-EAST company has erected a new style wind turbine on a farm in Devon.

Vertical Wind energy, of Newcastle, erected the 6kw 12-metre high turbine on George and Anne Douglas’ farm, near Exmoor.

Tony Gordon, chief executive, said its vertical axis design allows it to utilise the wind regardless of direction.

The turbines are said to be quieter than the more normal horizontal axis turbines and much more effective in high winds, when significant energy can be generated.

Chris Muir, partner of CH4e environmental consultants, worked with the company. He said: “Such micro generation wind turbines are a great way for estate managers and farmers to become energy producers as well as food producers. It will save them money.”
