AN archaeological survey has started on the site of a proposed train factory.

A team from Wardell Armstrong Archaeology has dug trenches in farm land at Amazon Park, in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, where Hitachi Rail Europe plans to open a train factory in 2016.

Hitachi wants to ensure historical remains are preserved before building starts in November. Exploration is expected to take about three to four months.

Earlier this month, the Japan-based manufacturer made a formal commitment to the project with the pledge of £82m and appointed Newcastle-based Merchant Place Developments to oversee the build and fit-out.
