Charolais big hit at sale

A CHAROLAIS breeder took the title at the breed society's spring sale at Perth for the fifth time.

The Campbell family, of Alnwick, Northumberland, won with 20- month-old Thrunton Bonjovi.

Judge Iain Millar said Bonjovi had "power, presence, length and good locomotion."

Ian Campbell, who farms with his brother, John, and father, Colin, said: "Perth is the most difficult award to win and we are delighted to receive it again."

Later, Bonjovi, who was a qualifier for Northern Ireland's Beef Quality Initiative scheme, was sold for 10,000gns to Harold Stubbs, of County Fermanagh.

He first saw him as a calf during a herd visit to Alnwick.

Mr Stubbs said: "He stood out from the rest and, more than a year on, he continued to impress me when I saw him in the ring.

"I was determined to take him home."

The Campbells sold ten bulls to average £4,683 - with 17 month-old Bullet fetching 9,000gns. They led the female prices with Vixen who fetched 4,200gns.

Other entries included Piatroon Brigadier, a 20-month-old from Harold Forster and Sons, of Humshaugh, Hexham, which sold for 6,000gns.

Peter Vasey, of Carlisle, sold Edenhurst Bobby for 6,000gns.

● Averages: 166 bulls at £4,408.58; 46 heifers at £1,551.03; eight cows and calves at £2,237.81.
