Bailie’s changes hands – and name
AFTER five years of
successful ownership,
partners
Harry Bailie and
Tony Turner have
sold Bailie's Restaurant in
Barnard Castle, County
Durham, through the Leeds office
of national licensed property
specialists, Colliers Robert
Barry.
Tony is planning to take wellearned
retirement and Harry is
looking to move on to a new
venture.
Dating from the mid 18th
century, Bailie's is a Grade II
listed property located close to
the well known local landmark,
the Butter Market, which is situated
in the middle of the main
street of this bustling market
town.
With is ruined 12th century
castle and famous public
school, Barnard Castle has an
attractive setting standing
about the river Tees and
Bailie's Restaurant is one of a
number of Victorian and Georgian
properties which dominate
the townscape.
Harry Bailie and his fatherin-
law, Tony Turner, purchased
the restaurant in 2003 and in
succeeding years they established
it on the local gastronomic
map.
Bailie's has a smart reception
bar and a restaurant which is
normally laid for around 44 diners,
and doors from the dining
room lead out to a rear timber
decked patio which provides
additional cover space in
warmer weather months.
The purchasers are Chad and
Mufti Choudhury, who are experienced
restaurateurs and
will be carrying out some refurbishment
prior to re-opening
later this month, re-naming
the restaurant the Bengal Merchant.
Nicholas Thomas, of Colliers
Robert Barry, said: "The combination
of a prominent position
close to the centre of
Barnard Castle and spacious,
well-appointed dining facilities
were key ingredients which
served to attract interest in
Bailie's."
Bailie's was sold for an undisclosed
sum off an asking price
of offers around £350,000.
