Breathing new life into former Butlins camp site

9:04am Thursday 12th October 2006

ABOUT 500 jobs will be created with the £120m redevelopment of a derelict Butlins holiday camp on the North Yorkshire coast.

A hotel, leisure centre, restaurant and shops are being built on the 150-acre former Butlins Holiday Park site situated three miles from Filey.

The coastal village scheme, headed by Yorkshire developer Essential Vivendi, will also see the construction of 689 apartments and holiday cottages over the next five years.

Laurence Corrigan, director of Essential Vivendi, said: "The Bay will bring a significant number of jobs to the area, add high-class facilities and breathe life back into this section of the coast."

The site was previously home to one of the first Butlins Holiday Parks and attracted more than 11,000 holidaymakers a week at its height until it closed more than 20 years ago.

Work has already started on site, with the first of five phases expected to be complete by May next year.
