Choose a local lawyer

FOLLOWING the recent big freeze, a regional firm of lawyers is advising drivers that, in the event of a traffic accident in the snow and ice, they can choose who represents their best interests.

John Hall, head of personal injury with TBI Solicitors, which has offices in Hartlepool, Wynyard Park, Stockton and Barnard Castle, said: “You’re more likely to be involved in an accident in this weather. If you are, ensure your claim is looked after with your best interests in mind, not the interests of your insurance company.”

Mr Hall recommended that claimants appoint a local lawyer to represent them. This way, they can ensure they meet their legal representative faceto- face rather than only on the phone.

An insurance company will often recommend a firm in their panel. However, that firm may be a distance away and will pay the insurance company a referral fee. A local lawyer will be acting on the claimant’s behalf, with fees paid by the responsible party’s insurance.

Mr Hall said: “Before telephoning your insurance company and finding yourself speaking with their chosen representative, you should walk into the office of your local lawyer, discuss your concerns and get guidance on what you’re entitled to.”
