FACTORY workers could benefit from a deal signed by pharmaceutical firm Glaxo- SmithKline (GSK) that expands the company’s involvement in the growing biotechnology sector.
GSK has entered into an agreement with Lonza, one of the world’s leading suppliers to the healthcare industry, that could significantly increase the firm’s production of biopharmaceuticals – drugs manufactured by biotechnology methods.
GSK’s factory in Barnard Castle, County Durham, is Teesdale’s biggest employer with about 800 staff, and already produces the cancer treatment Arzerra, GSK’s only biopharm product. The North-East site is hopeing its existing expertise can help it secure more orders arising from the new deal.
