Protection job begins

A PAINT firm has started work on a key contract for the Royal Navy’s new supercarriers.

It emerged in January that Ship Support Services Limited (SSSL), partowned by Pyeroy, in Gateshead, had won a £105m contract for painting the ships with a protective coating.

SSSL, a joint venture with Cape, of Wakefield, has started work on the first sections of the Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers.

The £4bn carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, will enter service in 2016 and 2018.

SSSL is carrying out the largest-ever Royal Navy paint job. More than 1.5 million sq m of paintwork will be completed by the time the first vessel enters service.

The work is being undertaken at six shipyards in the UK.

Bulkheads, engine, decks and keel sections of the carriers are being treated with specialist coatings that will protect them against the ravages of the sea for ten years
