NORTH-EAST businesses have secured more than £50m-worth of contracts for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
But Olympic triple jump gold medallist Jonathan Edwards wants to see firms in the region winning even more tenders to supply the Games.
The Durham University graduate was speaking along with Paul Williamson, senior office partner at Deloitte, in Newcastle, at Deloitte’s director development programme yesterday, where they outlined their determination to ensure the North-East economy gains maximum benefit from London 2012.
Edwards, who lives in Gosforth, Newcastle, is on the board of directors of the London 2012 organising committee.
Earlier this year, Compete North-East, run by Business Link, in conjunction with The Northern Echo, launched Winning Business, a campaign to highlight he potential for the region's companies to benefit from major contracts nationally.
Among North-East firms that have won contracts for London 2012 are Darlington-based engineering company Cleveland Bridge, Hathaway Roofing, of Bishop Auckland, Sotech Ltd, of Peterlee, Teesside’s Varley & Gulliver, and Dane Architechtural Systems, County Durham.
