Student team to represent region

A TEAM of young entrepreneurs from a County Durham college is to represent the North-East in the national finals of an enterprise challenge.

Students aged 14 to 16 from Staindrop Business and Enterprise College were judged as the winners of the regional final of the Make Your Mark Challenge, and will compete against 11 teams from across the UK in the national finals next week.

Given the challenge of developing a business idea which could make a positive difference to the local area, Staindrop students came up with DiJi Hats – a range of hats with built-in solar power cells and Bluetooth earphones.

DiJi Hats will sell online, targeting teenagers, especially those from rural locations and those who love outdoor activities.

Staindrop Business and Enterprise College was chosen as the winner after pitching to a panel of judges, including One North East’s energy policy advisor Kate Hatton and C2M managing director Gary Thompson.

Louise Kempton, Enterprise UK head of North-East region, said: “There has been a very high standard of ideas this year and the national final promises to be a tight contest.

We are really looking forward to going to London and flying the flag for our region.”
