A KEEN knitter often had to make a round trip of 60 miles to buy the type of wool and buttons she needed – so she opened her own shop to supply them.

Sally Lincoln started off with 44 types of wool and a large range of buttons, as well as a variety of baby clothes, as she launched her business on The Bank, in Barnard Castle, County Durham.

“I mean to bring in even more sorts of wool once I get everything organised,” she said. “I want to cater for every brand of knitter.”

Ms Lincoln spends nearly all her spare time knitting garments, dolls and toys for her relatives and friends at her home in Arkengarthdale.

“But when I needed a specialist wool or buttons, I usually had to go all the way to South Shields to find it,”

she said.

“I decided that, instead of making a 60-mile round trip regularly, it would be easier to open my own shop.”

Her range includes fine silk yarn, used for intricate small garments, to chunky material used for sweaters and coats. She also offers knitting needles, ribbons, knitting books and patterns, along with clothes for children up to the age of two.

“I hope a lot of enthusiastic knitters will be pleased that I’ve done this, as it will save them from making some long journeys in future,” said Ms Lincoln.
