A FORMER apprentice has become responsible for the fortunes of nearly 700 young trades people after taking up a position with a North-East training company.

Dave Thompson has joined TTE Technical Training, on Teesside, as the operations manager for its apprenticeship business.

It marks the completion of a journey for Mr Thompson, who started his career as an instrumentation apprentice at British Steel in Consett, County Durham.

In 1980, with the closure of the steel works, he moved to Teesside to finish his training. He moved into research and worked at British Steel’s centre in Grangetown before joining TTE as an instrument trainer.

Mr Thompson said: “Apprenticeships are as important now, if not more than, when I started out. This is especially the case when you take into account the changes in the age demographics of industry which mean highly-trained people are needed to replace an ageing workforce, when they retire.”
