AN MP has called on the Government to make a £200m cash pledge towards regeneration of the former SSI steel plant site at Redcar.

Redcar MP Anna Turley said it would “kick start” Teesside’s industrial renaissance.

She also called on Business Secretary Greg Clark to update her constituents on the proposed transfer of the site, owned by three Thai banks, to the South Tees Development Corporation.

In May Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen announced an agreement in principle had been reached with the Krung Thai Bank, the Siam Commercial Bank and the TISCO Bank, who were left owning most of the 4,500 acre site when the Thai steelmaking firm SSI collapsed in 2015.

Mr Clark failed to make such a pledge, but confirmed discussions over the transfer were positive and that everyone recognised the future potential for the site.

Ms Turley has also written to the Chancellor Phillip Hammond and said she hoped the Government would make a funding commitment in the autumn Budget.

It is hoped 20,000 jobs could be created on the site in the next decade.
