PLANS have been approved for an industrial hub tipped to create more than 100 jobs.

Developers say three new units will be built on Monkton Business Park.

They will include a 30,000sq ft base and smaller sites totalling 15,000sq ft and 10,000sq ft respectively.

Bosses say the site, in Hebburn, South Tyneside, which is already home to companies including Siemens and Hitachi Construction Machinery, will offer new tenants opportunities to grow by tapping into the region’s supply chain.

They also cited the park’s close proximity to Nissan’s Sunderland car plant and the planned International Advanced Manufacturing Park, which officials believe has the potential to deliver up to 5,200 jobs and attract more than £300m of private sector investment.

Washington-based Hellens Group, which is leading the project, has received £1.27m from the North East Local Enterprise Partnership’s (NElep) Local Growth Fund, along with loan funding of £1.7m from the North East Investment Fund, which is also administered by NElep.

David Land, chair of NElep’s investment panel, said the plans represent a great opportunity to help firms grow and create jobs, which will ultimately strengthen the region’s economy.

He said: “Businesses in our region, particularly growing small and medium-sized enterprises, are looking for new facilities.

“Hellens Group has a strong track-record in delivering projects and this scheme ticks many of the boxes in NElep’s objectives, which include supporting business growth and strengthening transport and connectivity.”

Work is expected to start on site in September and take around a year.

Gavin Cordwell-Smith, chief executive at Hellens Group, added: “We are tremendously appreciative of the support we’ve had from South Tyneside Council and NElep.”
