CYBERCRIME will be on the agenda at an event on Wednesday, May 17.

The dangers of online attacks will form part of the seventh annual DL Business Expo.

The event was already due to host a cybercrime seminar, but officials say they expect last week’s ransomware hits to NHS systems to swell attendance numbers further.

A senior member of Durham Constabulary’s cybercrime unit will be on hand to offer advice to companies on how to protect themselves.

Jayson Gurney, chairman of the Darlington Business Club, which organises the expo, said some companies had already suffered attacks.

He said: “Only last month, one of our members was called in to help a local firm, which was being held to ransom by cyber criminals.

“Cybercrime wrecks businesses and destroys lives.”

Mr Gurney added the event will feature more than 60 exhibitors and hundreds of delegates, with motivational speaker Marc Hogan headlining.

Speakers will also include Nigel Burton, deputy editor of The Northern Echo, who will reveal his tips on how to get a business noticed in the media.

The event, which will also run a breakfast to allow guests to network, is free for visitors and will start at around 8am at The Northern Echo Arena, based in Darlington.
