A HOUSEBUILDER has begun a fresh search to find its next generation.

Barratt Developments North-East has launched its 2017 apprenticeship programme.

Bosses say they aim to recruit six youngsters through the business’ Future Talent schemes, who will add to its near- 50 apprentice intake over the last decade.

Ryan Lincoln, commercial director for Barratt Developments’ North-East operation, began as a trainee quantity surveyor before going through the ranks.

He said his experiences as a youngster put him in good stead for the future.

Mr Lincoln, who has been with the business for 17 years, added: “I’d advise any young person considering an apprenticeship in the construction industry to really consider the opportunities on offer.

“There is much discussion about the lack of skills within the industry – we’re currently seeing a shortage of brick layers across the North-East – but we feel we’re playing a small yet vital part in addressing this gap.”

Ryan Dawson, a trainee quantity surveyor with Barratt, echoed Mr Lincoln’s positivity, saying an apprenticeship provides a host of benefits.

The 17-year-old added: “By the time you have gained qualifications, you have a great depth of knowledge in the sector, combined with practical experience.”

Barratt, founded by North-East tycoon Sir Lawrie Barratt, includes the Barratt and David Wilson Homes brands, and has developments in Spennymoor and Consett, in County Durham.

Earlier this year, the company’s North-East division said it was keen to strengthen its local roots through new sites across the region.

The projects will include Five Acres, in Barnard Castle, County Durham, The Drive at Mount Oswald, on the outskirts of Durham City, and The Grove, at Wynyard Park, near Billingham.
