A SOCIAL enterprise has taken on six apprentices as it seeks to secure the next generation of conservationists.
Groundwork North East and Cumbria says the recruits have joined its River Tees Rediscovered (RTR) operation.
Bosses say the apprentices, aged between 18 and 27, will learn various skills, including surveying and how to manage habitat and flood risks.
From Piercebridge, near Darlington, to the coast, the RTR project runs a series of community programmes and activities telling the history of the river.
Tom Watson, partnership manager, said: “We’re pleased to welcome our new apprentices; they represent the next generation of conservationists who will be absolutely crucial to preserving our natural and built heritage.
“These kinds of skill-based apprenticeships are vitally important to the region.
“Not only do they provide an employment opportunity, but they also help protect the natural environment.
“I’m sure our recruits will go on to become valuable members of our team.”
