A HOUSEBUILDER is readying itself to start work on a 335-property scheme it says will sustain more than 300 jobs.

Barratt is delivering the Bedewell Court project, in Hebburn, South Tyneside.

Bosses say the estate will put around £100m into the local economy and create and support hundreds of posts.

The work comes as Barratt, founded by North-East tycoon, Sir Lawrie Barratt, builds on a “healthy” market.

Earlier this week, the company revealed forward sales were higher than a year ago as a prolonged undersupply of homes and strong demand drives its progress.

Referring to its Hebburn work, Neil Milburn, development director at Barratt Homes North-East, said: “We have worked closely with South Tyneside Council for many months on the planning and development of Bedewell Court, and we are almost ready for construction work to begin.

“This development will contribute significantly to the local economy in terms of investment and jobs.”

Newcastle-based law firm Sintons handled the acquisition of the housing site, which was once home to a Baker Perkins factory, on behalf of Barratt.

Alan Harkness, consultant in Sintons’ real estate team, added: “Barratt is one of the most highly-respected names in UK housebuilding and we are delighted to have assisted.”
