A SOCIAL landlord has helped a former steelworker expand his business.

Shaun Tooth has taken on a worker after support from Coast and Country.

Mr Tooth, who previously worked at Redcar’s SSI UK, now runs a locksmith and window installation firm and contacted Coast and Country’s New Directions programme to seek advice on bolstering his business.

The scheme, part of the Youth Employment Initiative and backed by the European Social Fund, gave Mr Tooth, of Skelton, east Cleveland, advice on interviewing and shortlisting of candidates.

Following a taster working day, he offered 18-year-old Brandon Attwood, also from east Cleveland, a permanent position.

Mr Tooth, whose business has customers across Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough and Darlington, said: “The support from New Directions took so much of the stress away.

“They matched candidates to the skills I required, provided a venue for interviews and supported me to make the right decision.

“This is the first time I have employed anyone, but with Brandon I’m sure I’ve got the right person.”

The New Directions team works with businesses and young people, aged between 15 and 29, to find jobs, traineeships, apprenticeships and work placements.

Johanna Watts, Coast and Country employer engagement officer, added: “Starting and growing a business can be a daunting time.

“However, I’m delighted we have been able to help Shaun and it’s a fantastic chance for Brandon to take the first steps on an exciting career path.”
