MORE than 100 jobs are to go at a North-East subsea oil and gas firm.

Technip Umbilicals, based in Newcastle, has announced it is to cut staff due to the “ongoing challenging conditions being experienced by the UK oil and gas industry”

Technip manufacturers steel tube and thermoplastic umbilicals, used to connect subsea equipment to platforms in the oil and gas market.

Bosses said the company “remains committed” to its Newcastle site, as well as its other UK locations.

A statement from the company said: “Redundancies are being proposed to reflect the significantly reduced activity levels being experienced across wider industry, which are subsequently impacting the UK subsea sector.

“The consultation process will be carried out in accordance with legislative requirements and is subject to consultation with employee representatives before any final decision is taken.

“With a strong presence in Newcastle, and in other locations across the UK, Technip remains committed to its current operations and to being part of the UK and global subsea markets"

Technip Umbilicals is based on the River Tyne and was formally known as Duco Limited.

The company previously opened a steel tube plant, which it said was the most advanced of its kind in the world.
