CONSTRUCTION has started on a 10-acre business development.

Three medium-sized industrial units are being built in the first phase of a scheme at Team Valley.

Bosses say the work represents the first speculative build of its size in the region for eight years.

Keith Taylor, managing director of owners, UK Land Estates, said the project is a further sign of the company’s confidence, both in the economy and in their estate.

Planning approval was given for up to 200,000sq ft of buildings on Dukesway Central.

UK Land Estates director, Adrian Bartle, said phase one will see the erection of three units for industrial processes, storage and distribution – each one capable of taking 20-tonne overhead cranes.

He said: “Earthworks and civil engineering has already begun and the work should be completed by February next year.

“This is a medium-sized development for Team Valley and the first speculative development of its size since Queensway Central phase one was completed in October 2008.

“There is a lack of supply in the market for units of this size and quality and we have already had inquiries from a range of companies, including manufacturers and food firms.”

The largest unit will be 26,630 sq ft.

The others will have 20,000sq ft and 12,000sq ft of space.

Mr Taylor added: “This is further evidence of our belief in, and commitment to, industry in the North-East.

“Our partners agree that we should be building again.”
