A DESIGN and engineering consultancy says Government spending and transport improvements have fuelled its growth.

WS Atkins has seen revenues and profits rise as UK operations benefit from contract successes.

Bosses revealed work on rail, utilities and airports, coupled with Government infrastructure investments, has provided increased momentum.

According to full-year results for the period to March 31, UK operating profits were 21.6 per cent better off at £73.8m, while revenues were 4.4 per cent ahead at £943.6m.

The company said its progress was helped by its Faithful and Gould division, which has offices in Stockton and Newcastle and has overseen numerous education and commercial property deals.

They added the offshoot has also profited from an extended deal to provide contract management and administration services on the proposed Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.

Professor Uwe Krueger, chief executive, said: “Our UK business delivered very good results.

“The infrastructure market in roads, rail and water remains well funded and investment continues to enjoy Government support.

“Within Faithful and Gould, the business has performed well, with a steady stream of work, particularly in higher and further education, as well as commercial property.”

He added projects wins included appointments at the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow and an agreement with Westminster City Council.

WS Atkins previously worked with London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic organisers to transform the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park into a visitor attraction and community park, and operates across markets in the UK, North America and the Middle-East.
