MORE than 100 ex-workers at a collapsed parcel delivery firm could take action over its demise.

A law firm says former City Link staff from across the UK, including employees at its base at Belmont Industrial Estate, near Durham City, are looking to make a claim.

The company went into administration on Christmas Day, with more than 2,500 people made redundant at the start of the year.

However, JMW Solicitors revealed workers are mounting a fight, and said they could be entitled to take part in action over two areas.

Carl Moran, a partner in the firm’s employment team, said: “All dismissed employees are entitled to notice pay, up to 12 weeks depending upon length of service, and up to six weeks’ accrued holiday pay, which if unpaid can to some extent be recovered from the Department of Trade and Industry.

“All employees who have worked at a depot with 20 or more staff will be entitled to become part of a collective bargaining group and pursue further compensation of up to eight weeks’ pay from the department.

“While these cases are at a very preliminary stage, early indications are each employee may well recover several thousands of pounds depending upon how the case progresses.

“We expect a successful outcome.”

City Link employed 135 workers in the region, which included 56 at Belmont Industrial Estate, 45 at a Newcastle depot, and 34 in Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire.

Business Secretary Vince Cable previously said an inquiry could take place into City Link, but added any investigation would depend on the findings of administrator Ernst and Young.
