NORTH-EAST building contractors have been accused of ignoring a Government campaign to use 3D models in the construction trade.

John Minto, from Mintronics, in Darlington, said Business Information Modelling (BIM) is being neglected by companies despite the region being the first in the country to develop a specialist BIM hub.

Mr Minto, whose company is based at Lingfield Point and is a leading BIM re-seller, believes the technology is a key tool in the building trade because it saves time and money.

He said: “There is a severe lack of take up on the contractor side and that is appalling.

“It feels like this vital movement is being strangled at birth.

“People are worried BIM systems are too complex to use and that they can’t afford the time or money.

“Expensive systems are lying idle or are dramatically under-used. “This is a major Government drive but it needs another push.”

Mr Minto said he was disappointed North-East companies, including electricians, heating and ventilation air conditioning specialists, had shown a strong reluctance to use 3D modelling.

He said a Newcastle-based heating company revealed a number of experienced engineers saw BIM as an unnecessary step because clients had not shown interest in moving away from 2D computer systems.

He said: “BIM systems allows contractors viewing architects’ designs can see exactly how much pipe or wire or ducting or water pressure they may need.

“It means architects, builders and other contractors can work seamlessly and in real time and make buildings quicker without clashes that cost money.”
