HEADTEACHER FOR THE DAY: Toni Jones

A STUDENT has become the envy of her classmates after being appointed headteacher for the day.

Toni Jones took over the reins from Steve Harness, at Woodham Community Technology College, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, yesterday.

Soon after taking the staff briefing that morning, she made her first important decision of the day.

"I've had my friends coming to my office asking me to get them out of lessons, which I can't do, but I did get the morning break extended by five minutes," said Miss Jones. Miss Jones, 15, who plays piano and cello and hopes to be a drama teacher, also did some teaching.

"I like drama and performing arts and I would like to be a drama teacher so I'm taking the drama class,"

she said.

Miss Jones won the opportunity to be headteacher at an auction of promises during a recent fundraising event at the school.

Mr Harness said the exercise reflected the school's attitude to encourage a strong student voice, but that Miss Jones' headship was about having fun. "There is a lot we can learn from the students and we do listen, but we want Miss Jones to enjoy the experience and have fun," he said.

"In fact one of the things Miss Jones said was that all the pupils should have fun today."
