RESIDENTS from all corners of the region have reported feeling the earthquake which hit the country just before 1am this morning.
Emergency services say several buildings have been damaged - although there are no reports of any injuries.
The British Geological Survey said the earthquake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale.
The quake struck at 12.56am this morning near Market Rasen, in Lincolnshire.
In North Yorkshire, police received 66 emergency calls, and a further 593 calls on its non-emergency number, mainly from residents seeking reassurance.
Inspector Simon Lovell said: "All our officers have been carrying out reassurance patrols and checking there is no sign of any damage."
Fire and rescue crews were called out to four properties in Selby where the tremor left chimneys in a dangerous state.
A chimney breast collapsed at one property in York Street, Selby.
Police in County Durham said they had taken several calls from concerned members of the public.
But they said there had been no damage reported.
Residents across the North-East and North Yorkshire have reported feeling the earth move - although many were unsure what the tremors where until they heard reports of the quake this morning.
Lydia Hughes, 16, from Darlington.
"My sister got up this morning and said she had heard something.
She said the house shook but she had thought it was a lorry passing. It wasn't until we turned on the television that we realised what had happened."
Paul Marshall, 16, from Darlington.
"One of my friends, who lives just around the corner from me, texted me in the middle of the night saying, 'did you feel the earth shake last night?' But I was fast asleep."
David Calendar, 34, from Darlington.
"Some glasses started shaking. I didn't know what it was.
I thought it was a bit odd, but I didn't actually realise what had happened until I was watching GMTV this morning."
Ashley Scoones, 20, and Rebecca Hale, 25, of Darlington.
"We felt shaking and we were terrified. We didn't know what was going on."
In Stockton, one resident reported a tree being blown over in her garden.
Matthew Richardson, 34, from Hartburn in Stockton was reading in bed when he felt the tremor.
He said: "All of the sudden the whole room shook and, at first, I thought it was the wind outside.
"I woke up my wife to tell her that I thought it was an earthquake, but she just laughed until we switched on the radio this morning and it was the main news story."
Richard Lloyd, 28, manager of Mandale Furniture, in Stockton, was at home in Yarm the quake struck.
He said: "I didn't know what was happening - my sofa started moving like the washing machine was on then I thought the mirror was going to come off the wall. It was really cool though - even though I was scared."
Gordon Thubron, of Newton Aycliffe, said: "I'd just gone to bed and just settled down and the bed gave a little tremor.
"I wondered if it was the neighbours moving something next door.
"I had a look around in case someone had got in the house or if there was a fire or something and then went back to bed."
The tremors were felt in the main post office sorting room in Stockton.
A postal worker said: "The lads on night shift said the sorting racks - which are all securely anchored to the floor - shook for a good minute or two.''
The earthquake triggered all the intruder alarms in the high rise tower block, Hume House, near Stockton railway station. And picture frames crashed from the walls on to room floors.
Victoria Howard, of South Parade, Northallerton, was woken by the quake. She said: "I got woken up about 1am with the windows, bed and house shaking.
"I thought I was having a nightmare, and it seemed to last between eight
and ten seconds."
Daniel Robinson, from Redmire, in the Yorkshire Dales, said: At first I thought it was the wind.
It went on for five or six seconds, but it seems longer when youre sat in bed.
Ive ringing people all morning saying did you feel it?.
Seismologist Dr Brian Baptie, from the British Geological Survey, said: The is a significant earthquake for the UK and will have been widely felt across England and Wales.

I live in the West End of Darlington and can confirm that absolutely nothing happened at about 1am, no earthquakes, floods, snow, nothing.
In fact nothing ever happens in Darlington. Ever.

I live just outside of Richmond and I must have sleapt through it.
Didn't feel a thing.
After seeing reports on the Echo's website this morning I asked my wife "if the earth moved for her yesterday evening" and her response was "in your dreams!"

I am an insomniac who hasn't had a decent night's sleep for three years - but I managed to sleep through the earthquake! My wife and eldest son were woken up and thought a tree had fallen on the house but I was completely oblivious to it all.

I live in the West End of Darlington and it woke me up! I had an uneasy sensation that the house was moving, at first I put it down to a heavy wagon going past but all was quiet on the road outside and there was none of the usual window rattle. Then it ended and I went back to sleep, waking this morning thinking it had all been a dream - until I heard on the radio that infact I had survived one of England's biggest ever quakes.

I thought I was having a heart murmur or something at first. That was scary. When I realised it was just the bed shaking a little bit I wasn't so bothered.

I can confirm that we certainly experienced the earth move! It lasted for several minutes at around 1 a.m. We thought our boiler had exploded, however, soon realised that it was the ground shaking around us. Not good for the blood pressure.

Earthquake felt in Rainton near Thirsk at 12.58am. Awoke suddenly to extremely loud rumbling, thumping, whooshing and shuddering noises. House began shaking quite violently and the contents vibrating and clattering. Could feel the sensation of the floor moving what seemed to be up and down and side to side at the same time under your feet. It was a terrifying experience. I have never felt anything like it before and do not wish to again. I think our household was in shock afterwards.

I woke just before 1am and felt the bed shaking. The noise was awful, as if a train was trundling across the roof. The ceiling shook as though an elephant was jumping around in the attic. I shouted "It's an earthquake" to my husband not believing what I had just said. He just rolled over, muttered something unintelligable, and went back to sleep. My heart was racing after the tremor finished. I heard about the earthquake on the radio and was reassured that I wasn't going mad or overdone the vino the night before.

My sister just told me about this, which was an odd suprise as I was awake last night at around 1AM and didn't notice anything at all. Though being unwell I might have just mistaken it for a train passing, as often trains pass by along the line just over from us and those shake the whole house anyway.
I know that my baby niece wouldn't settle after being shook awake though and didn't get back to sleep till 6am. Fun for my sister and her husband!

I was woken up by a strong rumbling and shaking. At first I thought it was the wind but the tremors were coming from beneath. The side tables moved about a small amount but no damage. I was worried as our house was built in 1929 but there was no structural damage.A second wave came a few seconds later . It felt like it lasted half a minute all together ,when you are nervous time seems to stand still.

I thought some idiot was knocking on my window at first, given the noise, but then the sofa started to shake a wee bit so I knew it was some sort of tremor...I think we got off lightly though, looking at the damage caused elsewhere around the country

I hadn't got to sleep when I felt the bed shaking - at first I didn't know what was happening, then a thought about an earthquake came into my mind but I thought "don't be daft, at the height we are and where we live it can't be". Then I put it down to myself somehow shaking, but now I know it was actually an earthquake. It's unbelievable really. I couldn't hear any noises because the wind was howling outside.

I remmber in around 1969 that the house shook at about 10pm,my sister shouting 'I'm frightened'. I remember that day well as it was also the day I finally passed my driving test. That day seems to be lose in local history though, as were the floods in the 70s I think when the dene's beck flooded and reached up to Widowfield St, the dene's benches were floating in the water, they weren't riveted down in those days.

Immediatley I knew it was an earthquake even thought I didn't believe it myself, thought i was imagining things. It was not until I woke for work at 6am and watched the early morning news that I realised I had just experienced a 5.2 Earthquake, what an experience, will never forget the feeling of the earth moving beneath you.

Laid on my bed perfectly still around 1am...suddenly heard or felt what sounded like something falling off the bed which there was only me was impossible.
Lasted seconds. Stopped...was confused what it was but just thought I'd imagined it.
Then, the bed started to vibrate, again for a few seconds. Which seemed strange. As I knew I was still. Then the radio 5 News came on and the presenter was talking about chairs moving in the studio in London and e-mails and texts coming in about the incident.
Initially, all information about the quake in officially capacity was supplied from America.
Mum in another room slept through it. If the room shook, I couldn't say. Any sound? No, just what I thought was something falling off the bed but nothing had.

i woke up with bed rocking from side to side thought i was dreaming, then heard mam n dads bedroom door open n some1 go downstairs thought it was mam going to work until i turned light on and realised it was only 1am went into their room and mam asked if my bedroom windows were open cos doors are shaking i said well i woke up cos i thought the bed was rocking but thought i was dreaming. Didnt think anything of it until i woke up n my nanna told me there had been an earth quake. It scary but fun and exciting to think i have actually felt it. I went to work n few lasses felt it to. On the radio it said was going to be some aftermath over next few days. So listen or should i say feel out every one. :)[bold]bold[/bold]

I live in Canada, but by Nan lives in Middlesbrough. When I first saw the news reports hit the net around midnight our time (about 5 a.m. in England) I immediately got on the phone and rang to see if she was alright. The shaking and noise had woken her up and she had been unable to sleep comfortably from that point on. She said it felt as though the roof was coming in. My cousins in Wales apparently slept through the entire thing. I'm glad to hear there where no serious injures.

[italic]italic[/italic] In Harrow. I thought it was definitely an earthquake as the shaking bed started to make squeaking noise. I said to myself ; Oh my God, the Norwich Union has already refused to do anything for the rotten floor joists affected by water escape in my other house!!

To quote a certain DJ on the radio this morning in response to this stupid and blown out of proportion so called "earthquake".
Can't wait wait to hear Africa sing for us...
