Family fun day at Dora's Wood

A FAMILY fun day to celebrate the tenth birthday of a community woodland is being held tomorrow.

Dora’s Wood was planted next to the Lanchester Valley Walk as part of the Woodland Trust’s Woods on Your Doorstep campaign in 2000.

The event, from 2-4.30pm, has been organised by the Lanchester Partnership Green Group, Groundwork North-East and the Woodland Trust.

Karen Collins, from Groundwork North-East, said: “The wood is named after local poet Dora Greenwell, who lived nearby at Greenwell Ford in the first half of the 19th century.

“The woodland was designed and planted by many local volunteers for local people to enjoy and the aim of this event is to encourage more people to explore and enjoy their local woodland.

“The event will be fun for all the family with activities including a nature trail, bug hunts, scavenger hunts, a story teller, craft activities and more.”

The event is free. Children under eight should be accompanied. Visitors are encouraged to take a picnic but are advised there are no toilet facilities.
